A Word of Inspiration: Advice by Muhammad Babar Shahzad
My life as visually challenged "blind" individual from Pakistan
I am an Australia Award Scholar, 2019 enrolled in Master's Disability Studies, Policy and Practice in Flinders University...
Despite being Visually Impaired from a remote area, I have got education from a renowned university of the country and have also represented Pakistan at various international forums. In university, I was the first blind student to opt for anthropology and I had to convince the head of the department to take me on provisional bases to which he conditionally agreed. However, my educational performance and participation in social activities satisfied the teachers and afterwards, other blind students were accepted to the program.
In 2011, I established an organization called Empower Pak to work for the rights of PWDs. Since then, I have been involved in advocating on the rights of PWDs through ensuring implementation of the UNCRPD. I have been convening disability sensitization workshops for various stakeholders.  Because of these sessions attitudinal change towards disability has been visible. I have also been organizing access technology trainings for Visually Impaired. The participants have started to use computer and smartphones. In 2015, I along with other members of the organization mobilized the local philanthropist’s to support us establish a disability resource center in Abbottabad and within three months the center got established. It provides services to persons with visual impairment such as transcription of textbooks of primary and secondary classes into Braille and other accessible formats.
At the time of establishment of the organization, we had limited human and financial resources but due to strong networking with individuals and institutions, today we have offices in two Districts. We needed a braille embosser for the transcription of textbooks into Braille and despite its high cost, we arranged sufficient funds for the import of the equipment with the help of our supporters’ network. Because of partnership with the local administration, the organization has been provided an office and human resources by signing a memorandum of understanding.
After completing education, I aim to work with the provincial department of social welfare, special education and women empowerment and representative organizations of persons with disabilities of the area to establish a formal network for the initiation of an effective consultation mechanism for reviewing and revising the existent policies on disability thus ensuring maximum inclusion of people with disabilities in the policy frameworks.
