What is NRPU?
The National Research Program for Universities (NRPU), administered by Pakistan’s Higher Education Commission (HEC), is a flagship initiative designed to empower researchers, faculty, and universities to conduct high-impact, innovative research in critical fields. This competitive grant program aims to:
- Address Pakistan’s socio-economic challenges through science and technology.
- Foster collaboration between academia, industry, and global research institutions.
- Strengthen Pakistan’s position in global research rankings.
Funding: Up to PKR 20 million per project (for 2–3 years).

Principal Investigator (PI) must:
- Be a faculty member (PhD or FCPS/MCPS/FRCS) working on regular/ contract basis (contract duration must not be less than project duration) in the Higher Education Institutions (public or private) of Pakistan
- Can hold only one NRPU grant at a time
- Project Team& Research Collaboration:
- A consortia of faculty members from multiple university departments and/or multiple universities.
- Collaboration with industry will be preferred (For Private sector participants; No financial transactions will be made to private collaborators).
Applications can be submitted in response to a call for proposal. Submission must be made to the HEC online portal (research.hec.gov.pk) according to the guidelines provided in the call for proposals.
Once the required details are filled online, please upload all the required documents in .pdf form and submit the application before deadline.
The application has to be endorsed by ORIC/Research Office of the university through the same online portal. Only then, the application will be considered submitted.
