My Guide to Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarship :
My Guide to Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarship :
1) Identify course/University :
First of all you need to apply at your program/university of interest that are offering the scholarship. Usually, it is easier to get conditional/unconditional offers from UK universities but when there is global competition for scholarship courses, you must not waste your time in securing the offer before applying at Commonwealth Scholarship Commission(CSC) website.
2) Application at University:
Some courses are designed for professionals that means you must have previous experience and have demonstrated leadership and development related skills in your job. But job experience is not the strict requirement Please check each course webpage to find out eligibility requirements. Before applying to your course, please consider the following :
Which university is offering the scholarship?
How many are they offering for Distance Learning?
Why? Because for example : This year University of Edinburgh is offering 15 scholarships in various Health related programs (1 for each), while Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine(LSTM) is also offering 15 scholarships but only for a single program i.e. MSc Global Health. As Edinburgh is higher ranked university compared to LSTM, therefore process would be more competitive at Edinburgh. If you have excellent grades, & have demonstrated leadership with professional achievements do apply for top rated courses. Weigh your strengths wisely before applying. Last year these universities offered only 5 scholarships each, but this year they are offering 15. Huge opportunity!
3) Application at CSC:
Your job experience/internship would provide you with the background information to go ahead with the CSC application. It is because you have to write 4 Development Impact essays, Objectives during the program, career plans after 5 year of graduation, long term career plan, a personal statement and finally evidence of voluntary and leadership experience. 2 reference letters ae also an important requirement that'd support substantially towards your overall application package.
I would recommend that you make a developmental story which must be coherent with your previous experience, academic aspirations, and projects/courses you intend to take during your degree program consistent with your long term career aspirations. For example : If you intend to apply for health program at UK, do tell if your have previous experience(volunteering, internship, job etc) in health, do tell how it has impacted the project/people/country, and how that helped you choosing Public Health as a career choice and why you want to gain certain skills in this program to contribute in developing your country's health system. It must be well thought out career plan.
4) Final thoughts :
It is challenging and equally rewarding online learning experience. I would highly recommend professionals to seize this opportunity. Generally, the selection criteria include:
It is challenging and equally rewarding online learning experience. I would highly recommend professionals to seize this opportunity. Generally, the selection criteria include:
a. If conditions of the offer are met
b. The level of engagement
c. Academic merit
d. Impact of studies on career/and or home country as outlined on the personal statement.
If you have conditional offer please fulfil that condition, because it effects the scholarship decision. When world is grappling with pandemic and IELTS testing centres are closed, you have to have IELTS beforehand if that's the condition of your offer. Remember : Chaos Is A Ladder !
